Wellington-Middle High Apparel Design Day #6

Gallery Images: Multiple progress pictures taken of student work during class. Various techniques demonstrating screen printing, linoleum block printing, and making prints from the texture plates.

This was a very interesting class! This class was the second class after we the students had a testing week. The class started a little off than usual due to there being a substitute who couldn’t find the class at first and Ana not being there. The students had definitely gotten a little off track due to the testing week, but Alena and I tried to mitigate that by being a little more hands on and giving the students expectation for how far they should be by the end of class. We had to switch our technology due to complications with moving the screen-printing table so students were encouraged to mainly focus on getting their linoleum block prints done and deciding on making a shirt or bag that we had available for the class. The students were very in track during this class. It was a little challenging with a group of boys that did not seem to want to be invested in class, but I took time to sit down with one that I felt could be way further. I noticed many students that had been absent needed to be caught up with the progress the class had made so far. The students seemed very invested in their work time and many were able to make prints and designs on their tote bags and shirts. Alena and I continued to assist the students as many were comfortable asking for help with progressing their pieces. Many students were ready to practice sewing techniques by the end of class, but due to timing we were unable to do a full demo.

Glow

I think the students are very engaged and enjoy having time to practice the techniques we teach them. Talking with the students, they seem to know what they want to make and we as teachers help them to achieve their own personal visions.

Grow

I think that for next time, as stated in our last entry, we will need start clean up at least 10 minutes before the actual end of class and make sure students are taking the time needed to make the space as nice as possible. I think having a more strict timeline and being more organized on what students need to have by the end of class will help us in the future!

Curiosities, Questions & Curricular Ideas

  • I think being more clear about what the focus of each class is will help us stay more on track and organized with our timeline.

  • I wonder how much further we could advance given a bit more time and consistency with the class and materials!
