Apparel Design Lesson Day 7 》04/14/23

By Alena Bardey

Top to Bottom L-R: completed screen print and lino block print, completed printed shirt x2, experimental collaborative inked shirt, 2 students working on lino block carving, students finishing up their screen prints and final pieces, some final printed shirts

For class today, most of the students attended and we had a different sub today. Me and Jakobe got the students started off by giving them our plan for the class time and with this everyone got started working. The morale seemed high enough and everyone got back to what they had been working on before. Many of the students were painting their screens, and some had already finished their pieces before class had ended. Some students were also getting pretty experimental with the inks and their t-shirt designs which was interesting to see them exploring and expanding on the foundational techniques we had taught them. Things were starting to get pretty messy in the classroom about mid way through and so clean up started a bit earlier than the day before. Near the end of class, we had a few students put their finished shirts and pieces up for display on mannequins and on the center table and everyone was walking around checking each other's pieces out. Even though we had started clean up earlier, there was still a lot of unwashed printing tools in the sink unfortunately. Overall, the day went decently well and most of the students had some kind of finished piece that we will be able to assess.

Glow

All the students had some sort of finished piece to show by the end of class and everyone was kind to each other. It was fascinating to see some of the students experimenting with various printing techniques and making up their own adaptations of the foundational techniques we had taught them.

Grow

It was unfortunate that we had to miss all last week to work on these projects because I think that some of the students just needed a little more time to grasp the techniques and do more quality work. I also think that it would have helped to have Jenna there those last couple days for everyone's sake because the students did not clean everything like they were supposed to.

Curiosities, Questions & Curricular Ideas

  • I think with projects such as these, clean up expectations need to be more monitored and organized, or even a part of their grade, so students are held more accountable and learn that it is essential to clean up after yourself in an art classroom.

  • I wonder how the last two days would have gone if Jenna was there and we did not have two different subs

  • I think that for the next time, this lesson would be done best with a stricter timeline of when each piece we taught had to be completed by so that everyone was more on the same page of what needed to be completed
